About
Jeannie Hunt is a book artist, illustrator and teaching artist. Her own art work explores family history, sacred space and a sense of place in books that flip over, pop up and fold out into inventive and whimsical shapes. In 1998, she received a grant to travel to Guatemala to research indigenous textile and paper arts and to create a series of artists' books related to the culture and the landscape. Jeannie is a graduate of the Ada Comstock Scholars Program at Smith College and she lives in Northampton, MA.
Jeannie teaches bookmaking workshops for children, teachers, librarians and adults that incorporate creative writing, illustration and innovative book structures. The projects she designs are easy to build and fun to fill. Students learn to tell stories with pictures and words that help them find their place in the world as they learn about other cultures and traditions. Her workshops and residencies have been offered in a variety of settings including libraries, classrooms, and community art projects. Jeannie was featured as a local artist on WGBY's Literacy Day for her bookmaking work with children, and is the co-designer of Intersections: A City of Stories, a community-based book arts/oral history project that allows middle school students to explore the lives and tell the stories of local immigrants. She is a registered "Creative Teaching Partner" with the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Jeannie is a member of the River Valley Illustrators. Her border designs have appeared in the Core Curriculum Storybook Series and her book arts projects have been published in Brilliant Star and Tabellae Ansatae magazines. Jeannie serves on the board of Spirit of Children, an organization exploring the role of arts in community development. She also worked in her local community in the Interfaith Arts Project, promoting the arts as a way of building bridges between people of diverse faith traditions.
